Recently, IBM announced a new line of mainframe servers, running Linux called LinuxONE. The server series includes LinuxONE Emperor for very large enterprises, and Rockhopper for midrange enterprises.
The LinuxONE mainframe system consists of two lines: Emperor for large enterprises and Rockhopper for medium-sized enterprises.
IBM said LinuxONE Emperor may extend up to 8,000 virtual machines or thousands of containers, suitable for any single Linux system. Meanwhile, Linux One Emperor will be based on IBM’s Z13 mainframe that has previously been specifically designed for handling higher frequency mobile transaction.
IBM said LinuxONE system will operate smoothly with open source software such as Apache Spark, MariaDB, PostgreSQL and Chef.
IBM also said it will cooperate with a British company that Canonical to distribute open source software based on Ubuntu to run with LinuxONE and z mainframe line.
