Technologists have been striving to go paperless for the last 20 years, but it still hasn't happened. While many companies have embarked on the digital journey to create a paperless office, the vast majority haven’t gone paperless yet or failed in their attempt to go paperless.

So why did the paperless office strategy fail for many organizations? Here are
some of the most common reasons:

1. Bad habits
Employees have a habit of printing documents out whenever they need to read, sign or deliver within or outside the company. Due to familiarity, many office workers are afraid of or hesitate to adopt new technology. Due to its convenience and long history, we still stick with photocopy machines. Because the process of going paperless requires changing methods of working and using technology, statistics show that the average office worker continues to use a staggering 10,000 sheets of copy paper every year.

2. Fear
Many companies don't go paperless due to fear. They suppose that documents and data may be lost because of software or hardware failure. But in fact, digital document management is more secure than paper. We now can overcome this barrier by backing up the electronic copies of important documents. So you don’t have to worry about losing important data when coping with disasters like fire, earthquake, software glitches etc.

3. Technology isn’t ready for a paperless office.
There’s a fact that while the technology for going paperless is readily available, the rate of adoption for these tools and this system is quite low. Today we have a lot of support software like workflow software. BPM software or capture and document scanning software that helps us reduce the paper consumption, not to mention that these efficient tool can save time and enhance productivity at work.

4. Signature.
We know a scanned from of signatures in many official business relationships and contracts is not acceptable. But thanks to technology innovation, we now have electronic signatures that allow us to cooperate and sign contracts with any organization worldwide with the same level of legality as signing by pen

5. Wrong initiatives
Many failures in adapting a paperless office are due to misguided or incomplete initiatives. In the previous post, we mentioned about how do acheive the success in a digital transformation initiative. By making a detailed plan, learning from a forerunner and perform enough experiments or finding a reliable support, you can easily achieve your goal of going paperless.
