Work with Active Jobs (WRKACTJOB), Work with System Status (WRKSYSSTS) and Work with Disk Status (WRKDSKSTS) are three basic performance management tools that help you to tune your iSeries. However, you need to understand what these tools do so and how they work so that they are put to the best use at the best time.

Ron Turull who is an editor of Inside Version 5 and has more than 20 years experience programming for and managing AS/400-iSeries systems gives you what these tools do.

1. Work with Active Jobs (WRKACTJOB)

WRKACTJOB allows a user to gather performance data on jobs and programs running on iSeries. It can be used to track response times for interactive jobs with the aim of achieving sub-second response times. What is more, this tool is useful for tracking CPU usage and disk I/O activity for interactive and batch jobs. WRKACTJOB also offers some options you can run against the individual jobs it lists, such as working with individual jobs and holding jobs via the WRKJOB command.

2. Work with System Status (WRKSYSSTS)

WRKSYSSTS includes two parts. The first one offers a summary of the capacity of the basic resources available on your system and how much it is being used. For this reason, information over a given period of time can be tracked. The second one is an interactive performance tuning device that allows you to track the efficiency of your system and lets you modify the allocation of certain system resources to improve this efficiency.

3. Work with Disk Status (WRKDSKSTS)

WRKDSKSTS lets you track different kinds of activity on the disk units in your iSeries. With WRKDSKSTS, you can maintain an equal distribution of activity among your disk units. What is more, with a little ingenuity, you can even determine how a data file is spread across disk units.
