At the end of last week IBM announced it will begin selling a latest mid-range supercomputer type named z9.
z9 has the ability to calculate twice as fast as z8. z9 size is equivalent a household refrigerator.It is often used by large companies and governments for national projects that requires a powerful processing capability that the computers are not can afford. Mainly they are scientific research projects or financial information processing projects.
Z9 is equipped with 54 processors with approximately 18 billion transistors and cost about $ 1 million/unit. It can process about 1 billion financial transactions a day.
From July 2005, IBM has launched a campaign to upgrade some large size computer lines and z9 can be one of the achievements of the campaign.
Sales of IBM's mainframes annually reach about $90 billion dollars and led to piles of services worth more than 40 billion dollars from the software, solutions, maintenance ... IBM offers.
