IBM brings supercomputers to the Middle East and Africa

IBM and Mubadala expect that Watson will help industries such as healthcare, banking, education and retail in the Middle East and Africa.

IBM said it has reached an agreement to bring the awareness of Watson computing platform to apply to many different industries in the Middle East and Africa.

Watson is famous for beating the best players in the Jeopardy television show in 2011.

Since then, IBM has applied this system to handle computational problems in the industries such as healthcare, banking, retail and education. This system is based on the ability to recognize and understand the ordinary languages of people, as well as the ability to analyze massive data sets.

Currently, IBM is partnering with Mubadala Development Company to bring Watson applications running on cloud computing to the aforementioned industries in the Middle East and Africa.

Both IBM and Mubadala Development said they hope to be able to work well together to create a new ecosystem in the areas, including enterprises, application developers and startups. According to IBM, this partnership will further promote IT sector in the regions, especially in boosting the economy of the city of Abu Dhabi.

According to IDC, the IT market in the Middle East and Africa in 2015 is expected to reach 270 billion dollars, becoming the second fastest growing IT market in the world, and that is why IBM wants more investment in this area, although IBM appearance here was more than 60 years.

IBM also created a joint venture with Mubadala company called Injazat, specializing in Watson. The two companies did not disclose financial details of this cooperation.

IBM and Nvidia partner to manufacture supercomputers

IBM, Nvidia and the US Department of Energy are working together to produce two new supercomputers named Summit and Sierra.

The US Department of Energy, IBM and Nvidia will undertake the construction of two new supercomputer centers to create applications that will be used on two supercomputers about to be called Summit and Sierra.

The new centers will be places where IBM and Nvidia scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California cooperate with many scientific experts from the US Department of Energy. In particular, IBM and Nvidia will serve as contract partners to develop and maintain two new supercomputers expected to put into operation in 2018.

The new centers with two new supercomputers promises to pave the way for more researches about energy, climate, cosmology, biology, physics, astronomy and all the concerns about national security.

IBM's new chip four times more powerful than today’s most powerful chips

IBM has announced that they have created a new semiconductor chip that is 4 times more powerful than today’s most powerful chips.

According to IBM's latest announcement just published in the New York Times, they have created new transistors that are seven nanometer in diameter and a strand of DNA is about 2.5 nanometers in diameter.

The extremely small sizes of the transistors allows IBM can integrate up to 20 billion transistors per chip. That also means the processing performance of the chips will be four times more powerful than the most powerful chips available today.

Currently, chips are being manufactured on the 14 nm technology and chip makers are moving toward the 10 nm microprocessor technology for thẻ future chips.

Although the new chips manufactured on 7 nm chip technology have been only in the process of research and development, it is also a signal that Moore's law will remain true until at least 2018 and the upcoming technological devices will slimer, less power consumption, but stronger.

Some security vulnerabilities in the IBM i OS patched by IBM

Do you know that some security vulnerabilities in the IBM i OS including some lingering problems with OpenSSL and ISC BIND Delegation Handling vulnerability influence on multiple releases of the IBM i OS ?

Yes. Importantly, an attacker can take advantage of them to crash impacted servers. Thus, your PTFs have to be patched as soon as possible. Luckily, IBI has patches these vulnerabilities recently. 

In fact, the Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) software, specifically the Domain Name Service (DNS) are impacted by the more critical vulnerabilities related to the ISC BIND Delegation Handling vulnerabilities. According to the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), in December 2014, two BIND-related flaws were found. 

CVE-2014 8500 was the first flaw which could enable an attacker to exploit an oversight in BIND version 9. That causes BIND to issue an endless number of queries. As a result, resource exhaustion and a crash can be occurred. While the first flaw was rated as “critical” by ISC, it was given at 7.8 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) by the National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) because an attacker can easily exploit the vulnerability. 

CVE-2014-8680 was the second flaw which can not only affect the GeoIP features of BIND version 9.10 but also cause DoS attacks on affected servers. Because CVE-2014-8680 are not easy to be exploited, it was given at 5.4 on CVSS by NIST

While CVE-2014-8680 does not affect IBM i, CVE-2014 8500 does. In fact, i5/OS V5R4 through IBM i 7.2 is impacted by CVE-2014-8500. To patch the problem in IBM i, three PTFs have be released by IBM. These PTFs consist of SI55866 for IBM i 7.2, SI55748 for IBM i 7.1, and SI55895 forIBM i 6.1. Owing to no longer being supported by IBM, V5R4 will not be patched.

On the other hand, new OpenSSL flaws (CVE-2014-3569, CVE-2014-3570, CVE-2014-3571, CVE-2014-3572, CVE-2014-8275, CVE-2015-0204, CVE-2015-0205, and CVE-2015-0206) are also patched by IBM. Even though, they influence on every release of the OS from i5/OS V5R3 through IBM i 7.2, IBM will not patch the old releases of i5/OS. iT patched only IBM i 6.1 through 7.2 with PTFs SI56063 (for IBM i 6.1), SI55950 (for IBM i 7.1), and SI55951 (for IBM i 7.2).
