Conceptually content management includes two main types: Web content management and document content management.
The most commonly used Web content management applications are generally native to Windows and other platforms. Nearly all content management apps running on the IBM i, on the other hand, are at heart document management applications. This situation leads to a paradox that the lines between content and document management in the i market space are drawn more ambiguously.
Let’s discover the paradox by reading comments from Richard J. Schoen and Dan Forster. They are two representatives of the content-management vendor community.
According to Richard J. Schoen from at HelpSystems, content management rarely does not refer to structured secure access to internal business documents. Instead of, it usually refers to website generation of forums, product data, blog posts, edited articles and other informational content.
Dan Forster, president of inFORM Decisions, on the other hand, said that content management was all about sharing and editing documents and a content management solution would be used by writers, editors, etc on the same document.
According to Dan, document management is a term that his company use to describe the whole business and solutions his company provides. However, then his company begins to drill down with questions to address the specific need like document capture, barcoding, workflow, variable print merging, etc. He also said that his company and many of his competitors are in the document management business rather than the content management business.
